Bowen Technique Therapy

Small, precise, rolling type moves are made over muscles, tendons, and ligaments at specific points on your body where tension and stress tend to be held. These gentle moves are the catalyst that switches the body’s ‘flight or fight’ stress response into rest, repair, recover, digest mode. This shift occurs secondary to the stimulation of the fascia which surrounds the areas we are working on. The Bowen technique is unique in that it directly targets the fascia. The process encourages the body to release tension and stress, helping the body to physically restructure and chemically re-balance. After a set of moves, there is a break of 2 to 3 minutes, during this break the ‘magic’ happens, while your body and mind respond to the moves. You will lie on your front to start with and then on your back. The Bowen technique is deeply relaxing and calming, so if you are on medication for low blood pressure (hypotension), please have a chat with us prior to booking. Heavily pregnant ladies or people who can’t lie on their front or back, can still have Bowen by lying on their side.

Fascia is a structure of connective tissue. It connects every part of the body with every other part, wrapping around muscles, surrounds blood vessels and nerves and holding organs in place. Fascia binds some structures together while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other. Addressing issues in the fascia can reduce pain, increase range of motion, and help nourish muscles and nerves. Most people believe that if you were to lift the skin, you would see muscles and bones, instead, you would actually see fascia. The spongy feel you get when you press on your skin is the fascia underneath it. To keep your fascia loose and supple, stretching and flexibility exercises are highly recommended.

‘’Because fascia appears and connects throughout the body, you might think of it like a tablecloth. Tugging one corner can change the position of everything else on the table. Everything is connected”

An appointment will last approximately 50-60 mins, depending on the areas that we are working on. The very first appointment includes a consultation.

The appointments at my practice will cost £50. Home visits within Teesside will cost £80. I treat children 0-2 years old for free. Children between the ages of 2-11 years old are £25 per treatment.

The Bowen moves can be performed directly on the skin but can also be done through light clothing. The moves can be difficult to apply through certain materials such as woolly jumpers or denim jeans. Ideally, loose comfortable, cotton-based clothes should be worn. Access across the length of your spine, neck and shoulders will be needed, so a loose vest top or loose t-shirt and thin fabric leggings or shorts can be worn. Lycra tops, leggings and sports bras should be avoided if possible. In between the moves you will always be covered up to protect your modesty and keep you warm.

I normally recommend a course of one treatment a week for 3 weeks, this usually provides long lasting relief from symptoms, the entire body is then realigned and balanced. Some more serious issues or chronic conditions may need more than 3 treatments to solve the underlying cause. I will always be upfront and honest about what I believe to be achievable.

Some clients may have follow-up treatments every 6-12 weeks for maintenance. I advise that if a client re-injures or sustains a new injury to visit as soon as possible. Your body, already used to Bowen will respond really well and minimise the effects of your injury.

1. After the treatment and for the rest of the day do not sit longer than 30 minutes at a time. Just get up, have a stretch, and walk around the room for the rest of that day, obviously please stick to your normal bedtime routine!

2. Walk as much as you can for the next 3 days and for at least 15 minutes a day if possible.

3. Drink plenty of water for the next 3 days but also do try to drink plenty of water daily for hydration and good health.

4. Avoid stimulants, e.g. Coffee, tea, alcohol for the rest of the treatment day.

5. Avoid excesses of temperature on the areas I have treated ie. ice packs, electric blankets, or hot water bottles.

6. Have your bath or shower warm NOT hot. Don’t soak in the bath and avoid shower water hitting the back of your neck.   Stand sideways so that the water hits the shoulder. If you have a bad shoulder, let the water hit the good side.

7. Avoid any intense exercise, running, fitness workout or lifting anything heavy on the day of the treatment.

8. If you have been shown any exercises following your treatment, please remember to do them as they are for your benefit.

9. Avoid any other hands-on treatment for 7 days either side of a Bowen treatment as this will interrupt the Bowen healing process.

After a treatment, and in the following couple of days, you may experience what is known as a treatment response.  This can include:

Excessive tiredness or feeling drowsy

Hot and cold flushes

Temporary worsening of symptoms

Aching and stiffness

Feeling thirsty

Emotional release

Increase in energy

General feeling of well-being

Sleeping for longer and/or feeling more rested

In brief, this involves restoring the balance of the autonomic nervous system, stimulating the vagus nerve, activating the lymphatic system, encouraging an emotional response and focusing on breath work. The sessions are deeply relaxing and clients will alternate between lying on their front, on their back as well as sitting and standing for breathing practices.

This is entirely up to you. The recommendation is that that clients have at least 3 – 4 appointments in order for the physical and emotional relaxation techniques to take effect. Some clients may opt to have a follow up appointment every few weeks if they feel the need to do so but this is fully optional.
